Residual Values:
Better Value For Others Is Better Value For You
Would you like your next RP system to cost you less?
No problem.
Here's what you have to do:
Think about selling it as you think about getting it.
That's what we do, and we buy more RP systems than anyone.
There's no secret to how we work. In fact, we feel that the more people who think like us, the better off we'll all be. It's all about keeping an eye on residual values.
The residual value of a capital asset, such as an RP system, is the worth of the system at the end of a lease. The greater the residual value of an RP system, the less it will cost a lessee, like you, during the course of a lease. The very same rule applies if you'd rather buy the system than lease or rent it. At the end of your period of ownership, a higher resale price reduces the total cost of ownership.
There is one more thing you should bear in mind about residual values. They are not entirely out of your control. On the contrary, you can exercise considerable influence over the residual value of an RP system.
You can also predict — or at least make an educated guess — about some of the uncontrollable factors affecting residual value. Then you can adjust your plans accordingly.
The situation is pretty much the same whether you lease or purchase a system; the main difference is when you will get the benefits of residual value.
If you decide to purchase the machine, the value you get when you no longer wish to own it is up to you . . . and the market. You will receive that value when you sell the machine.
If you decide to lease the machine you are, in effect, locking in the residual value you will get at the end of the lease, because that value is built into your monthly lease rate. Your lease rate will reflect the expected residual value from the moment you get the system.
So, when you decide whether to lease or to purchase, you are choosing between what amounts to a stipulated residual value and what you reckon the market will offer when you finally sell he system.
We'll soon give you some advice about how to forecast some uncontrollable factors affecting residual values. But first, why don't we tell you a few ways to increase the residual value of an RP system right now, when you're trying to acquire it?
